Rural Community Initiative

The RCI was established in 1999 as an offshoot of the school governors at Stawley Primary School, this followed a review of the school and the realisation that by integrating the school more closely with the community it would help to safeguard the future of the school and provide a “hub” for the community. The RCI was born to co-ordinate this relationship and became the enabler for all the services required by the community following a survey of needs.
The RCI is a registered charity and the SCA is its “projects arm” dealing with matters of a more commercial nature and this is a cooperative industrial and provident society. In 1998/9 the SCA raised funds to relocate and improve the local shop and Post Office which is a valuable and well-used local facility.

In the past and currently the RCI has organised the following classes: – Adult learning and leisure – IT, Art, Rural Skills,
Printmaking, Creative Writing, First Aid and Fitness, Cycle Training for Children, Cycling for adults, Organic Vegetable Box Scheme, Farmers Markets, Youth Club, Tai Chi, Walking Group, Credit Union, Gardening club, Oil Syndicate and has set up links with Active Living under whose auspices it operates a monthly lunch club in Ashbrittle Village Hall.
